STRATEGIC BUSINESS PLANNING
Why should I do it?
A business with no plan to guide decisions for the future is like a ship with no rudder. Strong future profitability becomes more luck than judgement.
What needs to be done?
Plans can be simple or complex depending on the size of business and its spread of activities and the intricacy of the sector it is in. The plan is the output of undertaking a detailed analysis of the business and the markets in which it operates.
Why use a consultant?
After all nobody knows my business better than I do. This is absolutely true and the owner will have a major input to the plan. It’s worth remembering that most major corporations, employing highly qualified managers and specialists, almost invariably call in outside advisors to work with them in formulating their strategic plans. An adviser will often see things about a business that those close to it fail to see because they are too close. The advisers have no respect for ‘holy cows’ and they can focus on planning because they are not constantly being interrupted with day-to-day business. Advisers will also use tools which most medium sized businesses are unfamiliar with.
